The history of GPIB Sangkakala began with the inauguration of the Simple Housing Complex of Kodam V/Jaya in Kebon Jeruk in 1972. At that time, the conditions of the housing complex were far from adequate, surrounded by fields and farmland, with roads still unpaved.
In this setting, 20 Christian families from various ethnic backgrounds and denominations came together to hold Ecumenical worship activities, using the homes of residents or the building of SDN 02 Komplek Kodam V/Jaya as places of worship.
With the increasing number of houses built in the Simple Housing Complex of Kodam V/Jaya, as well as the growing interest of many Christian families in living in this complex, and with the expansion of Jakarta where many other residential areas were being built around the Simple Housing Complex, the need for a church building in the Kebon Jeruk area became increasingly urgent.
This led the Ecumenical Congregation of the Simple Housing Complex of Kodam V/Jaya to build a permanent church building as a dedicated place of worship for Christians.
On February 10, 1982, the process of building the church entered a new phase. Finally, GPIB Jemaat Sangkakala was institutionalized with the Decree of the Synod Council of the Protestant Church in Western Indonesia No. 1565/89/MS.XIV/Kpts. dated April 10, 1989 regarding the Institutionalization of GPIB SHALOM Bajem Sangkakala Congregation, and was consecrated on April 23, 1989. This consecration date was then designated as the anniversary of GPIB Jemaat Sangkakala.
On April 23, 2024, GPIB Sangkakala celebrated its 35th anniversary with a congregation of 140 households. However, the current condition of the church building requires some repairs, such as repainting, roof repairs, and replacement of lighting fixtures. The estimated budget needed for these renovations is more than Rp. 500 million or around USD35,000. The congregation hopes to celebrate Christmas 2024 with a renovated church, radiating glory for the name of God.
